A cut above the rest: why EstiResource estimates are different — and why it matters

ESTIMATING INSIGHT

By EstiResource · Capital Project Estimating

If you've ever been handed a capital project estimate and wondered whether the numbers behind it are truly reliable — you're not alone. Most estimates arrive as a polished summary with little ability to verify the underlying scope. At EstiResource, we believe that's not good enough. Every line item we produce is transparent, verifiable, and built to stand up to scrutiny. Here's what that actually looks like in practice.

Piping scope: where the details really live

Piping estimates are often the largest cost driver on a capital project — and the most vulnerable to oversimplification/short cuts. EstiResource takes a different approach at every step.

Can you actually verify the weld counts?

Yes — and we encourage you to. Pick any item from the MTO, across tens of thousands of line items, and check for yourself. Labor quantification and unit hours are traceable back to source data. Weld counts are based on a precise count of weld-end fittings and pipe cut lengths in every isometric and corrected for fitting-to-fitting welds — not rule-of-thumb benchmarks.

Are welds properly allocated to shop, module in-place, or field scope?

EstiResource determines scope allocation using sound algorithms derived directly from MTO details — not thumb-rule percentages. The number of un-flanged weld ends for each spool, by size and schedule, drives the assignment to module in-place or field welds. Pipe-to-pipe welds on runs longer than double or triple random length are similarly allocated. Any field-run piping that isn't shop-fabricated is correctly assigned to field scope.

Electrical bulks: beyond simple cable quantities

Electrical estimates are frequently underestimated because installation complexity isn't captured. EstiResource addresses this at the detail level.

Are installation hours differentiated by cable routing method?

They are. EstiResource differentiates installation hours between direct buried cable, cable pulled through conduit, and cable laid on tray — with specific adjustments for sharp conduit bends where applicable. Package ship-loose cable installed by field contractors and field runs at package boundaries are both captured correctly.

What about end connectors and terminations?

Connector size and type are determined based on cable diameter and hazard area classification. Termination counts and types are correctly matched to voltage level. These details compound quickly across a large project — getting them right from the start matters.

Coding, work packaging, and metrics

A well-structured estimate isn't just about accurate quantities — it has to integrate with planning, scheduling, and field execution. EstiResource is built for this from the ground up.

Does your estimate have a coding structure that supports work packaging?

A robust coding structure in a detail estimate isn't a luxury — it's a necessity. EstiResource incorporates WBS and CBS coding down to individual labor operations as standard practice. This enables clear allocation across the full work packaging hierarchy: from CWPs through Summary Level Planning Packages, Planning Packages, and Field Installation Work Packages. As the project evolves, EstiResource provides a dynamic link table to reassign scope to individual FIWPs, keeping schedule and control estimates fully aligned.

How do you support estimate review and verification?

Every EstiResource estimate includes a set of interactive reports with quantity and labor hour metrics. Filter down to any area, sub-area, work package, or material item group and all metrics update instantly. Reports can be downloaded to Excel for offline analysis.
